Let’s Break it Down
1. She Has A Brand (and executes it perfectly!)
One of my biggest recommendations for Depop is to build a brand around your shop. No, this isn’t just a logo and a color scheme, but a series of choices that align with the overall picture customers have of your Depop in their head.
Maya’s brand is simple: Urban Outfitters/Free People pieces, clean & consistent imagery, fast shipping, and a youthful vibe
If you are looking to create a brand for your Depop, ask yourself these questions:
What kind of inventory do I want to sell? Y2K, only Urban Outfitters, men’s, women’s, etc…
In this case, picking an aesthetic can be very helpful!
What is my shop name? Your own name, a brand (i.e. Hightidethrift)
What is my photography style? Clean, bright background, staged photoshoot, modeled, not modeled, etc…
How do I style my pieces? Pair with plain jeans, add accessories, flatlay styling, etc…
What are my shipping policies going to be? Ship next day, ship 3x a week, ship 1x a week, etc…
How will I elevate the shipping experience? Include stickers, specific polymailer colors, adding handwritten notes, etc…
2. She Ships Next Day
I’m not sure if this is 100% accurate, but after reading her reviews, it seems that she ships incredibly fast. One user @/chloeaddi said she even recieved the item the next day.
Shipping fast is a surprisingly underrated way to find success on Depop. Because of the way the platform handles shipping, there is a wide variety of shipping speeds. Some people ship 1-2x per week, others do it every day.
However, do not overpromise and underdeliver. If you cannot ship next day 90% of the time, don’t say that you can. Also, putting a short “Ships Mon/Wed/Fri” in your bio can help customers understand how soon they can expect their package.
3. She is Very Communicative
As per her Depop reviews, she is also very communicative. Here are some simple ways to do that if you don’t know where to start:
When a customer purchases an item, respond within a few hours with a “Thank You”, and let them know when you can ship out
Ex: Thank you for supporting my shop! I’ll be shipping this Thursday
When you ship the item out, send them a follow-up message
Ex: Thanks again! Your item was just shipped out and should arrive within 3-5 days. Tracking is available in your Depop receipt ☺️
Respond to questions, even if you don’t know the answer
If people ask if something will fit them, respond by saying you can provide measurements and/or provide your best guess instead of ignoring them
4. Her Product Photos are Gorgeous
Photo quality is Sooooo underrated on Depop; I’ve noticed that items photographed well tend to sell the best. — and IK, it’s so annoying to model clothes or lay them out perfectly on the floor, but promise me it helps so much!
Now I’m not saying you have to copy Maya’s photography style exactly (and you probably shouldn’t because it takes away from your authentic shop aesthetic), but there are some best practices considerations:
Choose natural, bright lighting: It’s easier to see the details, it’s visually appealing, and the easiest to do
Modeling > Flatlays: Many Depop sellers agree —> modeling your clothes is going to be better than a flatlay. It helps people understand how an item will fit and often motivates more purchases.
Make sure the item is the most prominent thing in the photo: Don’t try to deceive people by pairing some Frye boots with a skirt in a flatlay, and then getting mad when they think the boots are for sale. Center the item you’re selling, and don’t add too many distracting pieces/objects in the background, as such to take away from the outfit.
5. Be Consistent
This is my most important tip, and it is to be consistent. If you say you’re going to ship every Mon/Wed, ship every Mon/Wed. If you say you’re going to post 5x a day, post 5x a day. Even when it comes to messaging — have a consistent voice, tone, and frequency. This helps customers know what to expect, and builds trust between the two of you.
With that, good luck with your Depop and let me know what other deep dives you want to see below 👇🏼
